about

Should the enclosed, self-titled record by Gary Keady and John Vallins have been released nearly half a century ago?

It wasn’t until nearly 45 years after the record's shelving that the single of ‘Love Of My Life’ was discovered in the USA by Jacob Grossfeld and Andrew Goldberg from Ordinary Tones on a routine record dig. The single played like it was an effortless classic of late 70s AOR, and both were shocked to find that the French 45 was the only crumb on a dead end trail. To this point, contacting Gary to find out the story behind the music and discovering the rest of the untouched Keady & Vallins record was a catalyst for Andrew and Jacob to take up the reissue themselves and partner with Lion Productions for the release.

The Keady & Vallins LP is an all-too-familiar story of potential left unfulfilled - glorious pop music shunted by the impetuous thrums of an industry stricken by a decadence for high turnover and rigorous proprietorship. After a pair of singles produced by a young, upstart Lucien Grange (now chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group) achieved moderate success in France, an album was taped during the hours Keady and Vallins had downtime from other sessions, pulling world class talent from the pub down the street from the studio and pilfering instruments from the shop below (price tags still affixed) to bootstrap a striking blend of sepia-toned yacht rock and pop disco-lite. Born out of a quick friendship turned decades long songwriting partnership between Gary Keady and John Vallins, the full-length record was a mark of the duo’s growing promise as songwriters at Chappell—the publishing house’s self-proclaimed Australian facsimile of the American duo Hall & Oates. But that’s not quite what came to be.

Dormant since its completion in 1979, the Keady & Vallins effort slots in perfectly amongst its contemporaries as a classic. To further cement its legacy, Keady & Vallins contains the songwriter‘s original cut of Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams’ #1 hit “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late” (written by Vallins), and features a coterie of preeminent musicians, including Tommy Emmanuel (guitar) and John Altman (strings). The resulting project is teeming with infectious hooks and delicate textures, living in the intersection between Bobby Caldwell, Steely Dan, and Saturday Night Fever-era Bee Gees.

Keady & Vallins is special to Ordinary Tones, marking the first release for the new imprint in collaboration with the prolific reissue outfit Lion Productions. From the first snarl of the opening saxophone line on ‘Tonight, Love Is In Your Eyes,’ to the loops of ‘Love Me Little, Love Me Long’ begging to be sampled, the record holds true all of the aspects audiences have loved about other classics in the genre. With its release, Keady & Vallins takes up its rightful place as an important and necessary touchpoint for fans of 70s AOR.

We hope you enjoy the music as much as we do.
